Investing through a network of Business Angels

Dear Business Angels friends, dear readers,

What brings us together?

Supporting innovative entrepreneurial initiatives that offer the hope of progress for a better and more pleasant world. When I look at our portfolio of current and resold holdings and review them, I see that many make the promise of an offering that opens up new perspectives, improves our habits, makes our footprint on nature more respectful, facilitates our existence and even promises to prolong it in the case of certain biotechs.

Yet there are many other ways to support innovation. First and foremost, donations to research organizations. A civic act, it remains a one-off. It's a long-term investment. The latter can be made through participatory financing organizations, which offer real estate, consumer goods or innovative projects.

Financial institutions market products to support the development of start-ups. Their investment is generally made at a later stage in the company's development, when the proof of their offer is established and the user's appetite is confirmed. Investors do not always have an exhaustive view of the companies they support. They are listed and categorized by the management company, but detailed knowledge of their activities requires time-consuming research.

Many investment funds are doing similar work. This one is coordinated by the best practices of the France Invest Federation. Here too, capital is directed towards more mature start-ups than the initial targets of the Business Angels, although some funds are increasingly investing with Business Angels networks from the seed stage. The latter demand higher entry fees from their partners than those of the networks.

The Business Angels of the Grandes Ecoles make investing in innovation accessible to well-informed investors. At BADGE, the minimum investment is €5,000. This year, the amount invested through BADGE will reach €4 million.

Aware that success is fostered by a shared vision, the twelve main networks of Business Angels in the Paris region formed an association in 2020: Paris Région Angels (PRA). Celle-ci has just elected me as its new president, effective January1, 2024. My aim will be to further promote joint initiatives to identify the best and most promising start-ups, and to encourage co-investment between BAs networks.

Each network retains its own vocation, its own specificities, its own DNA, but our aim is the same: to promote innovation and help shape the economy of tomorrow.

So let's continue to support innovation, through Business Angels networks.

Season's greetings to all and see you in 2024!

Best regards,

Paul Leondaridis,

Chairman of Business Angels des Grandes Écoles.

A week to promote the activities of Business Angels networks

The 18th Business Angels Week (SBA) promoted by France Angels was held from November 27 to December 2, 2023 across France. The aim of the event was to raise awareness of the role of business angels in the development of innovative start-ups, by highlighting their role in financing and supporting these companies at an early stage of their growth, when the risks remain significant.

The 64 business angel networks affiliated to France Angels mobilized to organize a series of events across France, including plenary sessions, training courses, open days, webinars and birthday parties.

The BADGE network open day

The Business Angels des Grandes Ecoles (BADGE) network held an open day on November 28 at the EDHEC Business School campus in Paris, as part of Business Angels Week. The event brought together 80 business angels and guests, both face-to-face and remotely, giving them the opportunity to experience seed investment and discover the world of start-ups financed by the network.

After a presentation of the dealflow's active projects by Philippe Pernot, Vice-Chairman in charge of appraisals, 3 fund-raising start-ups presented their know-how in the fields of AI/industry, healthcare and aerospace. The evening was also marked by a presentation of the SIBA BADGE 2023 by its President Gaston Khoury. SIBA BADGE 2023 enables BADGE members to spread their investments over several seed companies already selected by the BADGE network.

A conference to understand the objectives of the new finance law and its impact on investment in young innovative companies (JEI).

Paris région Angels, an association bringing together the main business angels networks in Île-de-France, including BADGE, organized a conference on the theme of " Business Angels and start-ups: the ambitions of the new finance law " on Thursday November 30 at the Hôtel de Région Île-de-France. The day was punctuated by speeches from :

  • Paul Midy, MP for Paris-Saclay and author of the report to the government on measures to support investment in startups and innovative SMEs, enlightened the audience on the provisions of the new finance law and their impact on investment in these young companies.

  • Alexandra Dublanche, Vice President of the Île-de-France Region, in charge of Recovery, Attractiveness, Economic Development and Innovation

  • Patricia Braun, President and Partner of In Extenso Innovation Croissance, shared her expertise in supporting startups.

  • Valérie Solomé-Collomb of BNP Paribas Banque Privée, who shared insights on financial opportunities.

The event continued with presentations by three start-ups from the region's Le Perqo incubator: HEXOWHEEL, AMI ® : Assistant Mémoriel Interactif, and CHIRON IT. Hexowheel was voted the most promising start-up by the audience, and the prize was subsequently presented to its president Rodolphe LINON by Mme Dublanche and Alberto Gabaï, president of PRA.

CogEngines has developed an AI and vision algorithm applied to industrial robotics. "We proceed from eyes and a brain to industrial robot arms. The cobotic stations observe and respond in coactivity with the operators, who communicate with our AI using hand gestures. CogEngines has a proprietary AI that falls into the category of "re-inforcement learning ". This approach has led to the coding of a frugal AI, which does not need to be connected to computer networks or servers to learn. The AI is able to recognize the objects presented, and adapts to the format of the objects when the range changes. Finally, it doesn't need to know the location of objects in advance, but must be able to pick them up on the fly when they're in motion, just as a human does.

Omini offers a portable device for bedside blood testing. Its patented sensor-based technology enables near-patient testing and self-testing, while keeping providers informed every step of the way. Combining multi-sensor blood test strips, a portable connected reader and a clinical and biological data transmission application, this unique technology represents a giant step forward for precision medicine and a powerful catalyst in the transition to preventive care.

SpaceDreams is the architect of spaceports. The company develops ground facilities for launchers. Today, each launcher develops its own resources. A launcher for a launch pad and a launch pad for a launcher, as if each aircraft had its own airport. Start-up is developing the NuPad, the first interoperable, modular and mobile launch pad, and its digital twin, the TwinPad. It cuts the captive link between launchers and launch pads. It cuts investment and operating costs in half, and consolidates customer business.
